Depression

acupuncture-treatment1

Depression is usually treated these days with a cocktail of pharmaceutical medications predicated on the idea of a neurotransmitter deficiency.  While many people do indeed seem to have a chemical imbalance leading to chronic depression that can sometimes involve several generations in a given family, there are others who have what I call “situational depression”.  Meaning, that a person’s experiences have led to a temporary depressed state that includes heightened stress and fatigue.

The formula for many people’s depression these days seems to be: stress+fatigue+time=depression.

The mind can only maintain a healthy, happy outlook on life as long as energy levels are good and the body can adapt to stress without getting overwhelmed.  If you have someone who is generally worn out and exasperated by the circumstances of their life, how long do you think the mind can hold up?

I do not intend to usurp the established western model of treatment for depression because in many cases it is appropriate, but SSRI’s (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are handed out like candy these days.  And the problem may not be a chemical one.

It’s a pretty simple idea.  Increase a person’s energy; decrease their stress, and viola!  They will feel happier, more balanced and generally better about life.
