The common endocrine disorders of today generally involve the adrenals and the thyroid gland. With our fast paced, high stress lifestyle we generally do a number on the adrenals, driving them to produce excess cortisol in response to caffeine, sugar, and stress to name a few. As with any organic system in nature, you can only push so hard until it creates a decline in function.
In Chinese Medicine, we place importance on the kidney’s energy. We say that the kidneys represent a storehouse of qi in the body, the root of all yin and yang energies. The kidneys are said to be the place in the body where the “prenatal essence” is stored. Meaning, that which is given to you from your parents. In other words, we are saying that a person’s inherent constitution is connected to the kidneys.
I believe that there is a close connection between what the ancient Chinese saw in relation to the kidneys and what we know today as being adrenal function. The adrenals are considered to be the foundation of metabolic energy in the body. They secrete a fuel that drives countless metabolic pathways and without this fuel one will feel lethargic, sleep poorly, gain weight, etc.
